All of our expeditions will be based on the participants’ choices. We will have an orientation meeting where the girls will choose the activities they want to do and the lessons they want to learn while in the back country.
Come ready to be yourself and feel the freedoms of nature. Enjoy the absence of social pressures that weigh you down from day-to-day.

AWOL Wilderness Backpacking Service Project
From August 2nd to the 10th, The AWOL Institute and the Montana Wilderness Association (MWA) are working together to provide girls with an opportunity to learn outdoor skills, discover their personal strengths, and to provide service to others through work that will improve access to some of Montana’s most serene and awesome natural spaces.
The AWOL girls will be joining MWA for a week of trail maintenance in the rugged and pristine Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area. Work will include erosion control touch-ups (digging water bars and drain dips), cutting back overgrown brush on the trail (trimming branches), removing fallen trees on the trail (using two man crosscut saw), and re-tread where needed to re-establish the trail. All work is done with hand tools, no motors allowed! You’ll also have traditional pack support (horses and mules) to help get group gear to camp. And it's not all about work. Girls will also enjoy engaging activities that promote personal well-being, enhance self-esteem, and increase girls' confidence.
Girls are required to provide their own transportation to the meeting spot in Wise River, MT. This program will cost $200 per participant. Participants must be 13 years of age or older. Yes, we take college-age girls, too! all profits go to AWOL's scholarship fund to help provide outdoor opportunities for girls who cannot afford the opportunity to get into the woods (donations also accepted and greatly appreciated).
Scholarships are available!
AWOL would love to get every girl out in the woods - regardless of ability to pay! If you are a woman, 18 years old or older, and you have wilderness first aid and CPR training along with adequate outdoor and educational training/education/experience, we'd also love to have you volunteer for this trip at no cost to you.
