The AWOL Institute primarily serves adolescent girls ages 10 to 18. Eventually, we will also provide programming for girls and women of all ages. We welcome women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds, those who want to be leaders in their communities, and young women who are seeking improved health and well-being.
The AWOL Institute is a non-profit organization based in Missoula, Montana. The founders of AWOL met working at a summer camp where they shared their dream of opening their own camp one day. They never looked back, and now their dream to increase girls’ participation in outdoor activities is becoming reality.
Sarah Megyesi: M.S. Resource Conservation, B.S. Biology/Secondary Education. A Montana native, Sarah's enthusiasm for The AWOL Institute’s mission and services stems from her childhood experiences in nature. Outdoor adventures as a child shaped her into an avid outdoorswoman, passionate athlete, and a community leader with a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of girls. Sarah has been an instructor for a local outdoor adventure camp for six summers. She is a girls basketball and volleyball coach, and she teaches middle school. Sarah is certified in wilderness first response and CPR.
The AWOL founders have done their research, and they know that girls will benefit from AWOL's programs. You'll find a summary of some of their findings and research HERE.
